I have a cousin who lives and breathes these adorable creatures.  She has penguin pajamas, penguin nutcrackers and penguin jackets just to name a few of her items and collectibles.

Because the popularity of penguins has grown so much, there are many land and cruise travel packages that take you right up to them for a birds-eye-view!

Penguins primarily dwell in the Southern Hemisphere in some of the most out-of-the way places on the planet. Several species are found in more temperate locations and one species, the Galápagos penguin, is the only one that lives north of the equator. Most people who visit Antarctica go just to see the penguins.

Antarctia is the top spot in the world to encounter penguins. Imagine standing in the midst of a penguin colony in the Artic! Talk about a Kodak moment, or these days, the selfie possibilities. Emperor and Adelie penguins are the most populous here as they frolic across the snow and ice.  The Adelie penguins are known for their tuxedo attire appearance.

New Zealand

New Zealand is home to several penguin species such as the little penguins, Fiordland crested penguins, snares penguins and the endangered yellow-eyed penguins.

The Southern tip of Chile claims some Antarctic territory and with it a population of penguins.  Patagonia is home to four species that can be seen anywhere from Punta Arenas to the hillsides of Tierra del Fuego or local boat landings.

Falkland Islands

Penguins turn up regularly on these sub-Antarctic islands off the coast of Argentina. The most common penguins are the magellanic and the gentoo species. The Falklands are home to the largest gentoo population on earth. The gentoos have bright, red-orange beaks and citrus colored feet.

Galapagos Islands

The Galapagos Penguin is the only penguin species to be found naturally north of the equator. They are often seen sunning themselves on rocks or swimming and catching fish. The total population of Galapagos penguins is very small, numbering only a few thousand in total.

Several cruise lines offer expeditions for penguin spotting that include Azamara, Royal Caribbean, Princess, and Windstar. You may want trade your next beach vacation for a snowy one to chill out amongst a colony of dapper, well-dressed penguins!
