Grand Christmas Getaways

Taking a vacation during the Christmas holiday is becoming more popular each year.  It may be a little early to talk about Christmas, but when it comes to planning a trip during this time, sooner is better than later! I have put together a list of locations to visit that are sure to get you in the holiday spirit.

Bethlehem, West Bank of Occupied Palestinian Territories

What could be more moving than to visit the birthplace of Jesus.  This sacred destination is revered by many religious denominations.   The Church of the Nativity is the town's most famous site and is said to be the birthplace of Jesus Christ. A church has sat here continuously since Byzantine Emperor Constantine built a chapel on the birth site of Jesus in the 4th century AD.

I was fortunate to visit Bethlehem a few years ago and these religious sites.  Although I wasn’t there during Christmas, I can only imagine that the experience would be even more memorable during that season.

Vienna, Austria

Vienna Christmas TravelVienna goes all out for the Christmas holidays. The Christmas markets draw people from all over the world.  The market tradition goes back to the Middle Ages beginning around 1298 when the local citizens were allowed to hold a December market. The tradition has continued over the years. The beautiful streets of Vienna boast vendors that sell an array of seasonal gifts along with stands that offer punch and chestnuts and treats galore!

Asheville, North Carolina

Railroad tycoon, George Vanderbilt, chose the Asheville area to build his Gilded Age palace, Biltmore House. The grand home is a site to behold on any given day but is even more magical during the Christmas holiday. It is adorned with 55 elaborate hand-decorated trees that includes the spectacular 35-feet tall live Fraser fir located in the Banquet Hall.  There are also 1,000 poinsettias, miles of garland and live Christmas music. In the evenings are candlelight tours with performance by choirs and ensembles.

Outside the mansion is just as festive with a 55-feet tall Norway spruce on the front lawn as well as 45,000 lights and countless hand-lit luminaries.

This is one of my favorites places during Christmas. I have been fortunate to enjoy several candlelight tours at Biltmore House and Gardens.

New York City, New York

New York City Christmas TravelNew York attractions turn into an illuminated winter wonderland at Christmastime. Watching the skaters at Rockefeller Center with the backdrop of the huge decorated Christmas tree was a highlight for me when visiting during the holidays.  For a festive holiday show, get tickets to the Radio City Christmas Spectacular.

There are countless destinations to visit during the Christmas holidays in the USA and all over the world. Many river and ocean cruise lines sail over the holidays, as well.
