Fall Foliage Frenzy

It’s almost that time of the year again for the spectacular show of fall foliage with the vibrant color displays of orange, scarlet, gold and deep purple.  Autumn makes us want to go on a tour or cruise in New England or a road trip to the Rockies.  With so many state parks and national parks gearing up for the fall season, there may even be a top foliage viewing spot out your own back door.

I have compiled a list of some of the best places in the country for taking in the fall foliage views:

New England

New England comes to our minds first and foremost and with good reason.  Maine, Vermont and Connecticut offer a plethora of parks, forests and quaint towns for observing the changing of the leaves. Bar Harbor, Maine is a top choice in New England with the Acadia Byway’s magnificent coastline and colors throughout Acadia National Park.  Stove, Vermont comes alive in the Green Mountains. Many travelers stay at the Trapp Family Lodge as their base for fall color viewing and during Oktoberfest.

The Great Smoky Mountains in Tennessee

The Great Smoky Mountains puts on a magnificent fall foliage show with blazing colors

Gatlinburg is a small town in the middle of the Smoky Mountains that offers a great destination for leaf enthusiasts to base their stay. The highest point in the state, Clingman’s Dome is where visitors can view a brilliant tapestry of colors. The 11-mile loop around Cades Cove winds past beautiful foliage surrounded by streams, waterfalls and gorgeous vistas.

Autumn in the West

Colorado and Wyoming are the most visited during the fall months for peak viewing in the Rockies and Tetons. Aspen, Colorado is widely popular during this time for the hues of bronze and yellow that blanket the mountains.

Blue Ridge Parkway

The Blue Ridge Parkway offers one of the most scenic drives in the country, but it’s at its very best during the autumn months. Winding through Southern Virginia, into Western North Carolina, visitors are in for a real treat to see foliage in nearly every hue on the color spectrum.

A great way to kick off this spectacular road trip is to attend the Virginia Fall Foliage Festival, held during the first two weekends of October in the quaint community of Waynesboro located at the beginning of the parkway.

The Blue Ridge Parkway in autumn is one of my favorite places for fall viewing as I have been awe-inspired year after year by the vivid color display.
